Join Te Papa curators on a special behind-the-scenes investigation of portraits in the museum’s permanent collection.
Rebecca Rice, Curator of New Zealand Historical Art at Te Papa, and Athol McCredie, Curator of Photography, will lead back of house tours of Te Papa’s collection on Friday 28 May. This tour will highlight a range of styles and approaches to the genre of portraiture. Your personally guided tour will take in the photography and paintings stores – a rare opportunity to see some of the treasures we hold in the national collection. Bookings essential. Numbers limited to 24.
On Saturday 29 May at 12pm Rebecca Rice will be joined by colleague Matariki Williams for a floor talk unwrapping hidden narratives behind Te Papa's portrait room, Ngā tai whakarongorua / Encounters. The portraits on the walls represent multiple encounters of various kinds from pre-Cook through to the early twentieth century and tell stories about our shared history.
